Yoga Can Help You With Anxiety… Here’s How

This question comes from an anonymous submission and it reads:

Dear NK, I suffer from anxiety, can you please let me know if yoga can help with anxiety?

Firstly I want to say thank you for being so brave and courageous to ask this question. Anxiety is a condition that can make people feel alone and unable to talk about it out loud, so thank you for trusting me to be a resource for you.

Now on to the question:

I want to make it clear that if you are suffering from anxiety the best resource would be a licensed therapist, who is certified and trained to help treat anxiety. A licensed professional should be your first choice when dealing with anxiety.

In addition to seeing a therapist, you may be interested in some alternative techniques to help with anxiety and yoga is actually an excellent practice to help create calm and centeredness.

Yoga means unity, unity of mind, body and spirit to create inner stillness. as an exercise practice, It helps with anxiety by releasing endorphins that help us feel happier and less anxious. Also, a yoga practice incorporating meditation and breath, helps create a sense of self awareness and mental calm and takes focus off thoughts. If you battle anxiety like I do sometimes, you know that thoughts can be very fleeting and take you down a rabbit hole of negativity.

So practicing yoga helps us to not focus on thoughts and rather our breath in the moment, reducing our risk of over thinking.
